Blue Planet, Blue Mood

For more than a century, large scale Eco-exploitation hid in faraway places, doing planet altering work out of sight, shipping the products of exploitation to growing economies and leaving the consequences behind. With the advent of global communications and air travel, it’s become increasingly difficult to hide these activities and their effects from the public conscience.

Not willing to relinquish profits and political influence, industries built on a foundation of exploitation have shifted from hiding their activities, to denying their effects, creating an illusion of comfort and harmony with sophisticated propaganda, mocking science, blocking efforts to deploy alternative measures and politically isolating opposition to their activities.

I’m not talking about the human footprint we leave behind, as a consequence of a healthy, happy, memorable life well lived. This is about gross, permanent alterations to our home in space, our life sustaining Blue Marble. This is about destruction of Mahogany forests to satisfy a fabricated infatuation with class status end tables and headboards. This is about disfiguring the landscape, contaminating fresh water supplies, pumping the atmosphere full of climate changing gases and leaving ticking disaster time bomb ponds of poison behind because of an insatiable appetite for excess and an unwillingness to do without things we don’t need or invest in clean technologies to power them. This is about self-mutilation and intentionally suppressed awareness.
