The stakes couldn’t be higher and the rewards are beyond our wildest expectations. It’s either our shining moment to claim this opportunity or our dismal failure to relinquish this challenge to the influences of immediate gratification and material greed. Do we go forward like a cork on the tide of a dark destiny or do we engineer and define our energy future?
A history of critical thinking, technical innovation, a spirit of adventure and Yankee resolve are what we have to work with. I don’t see the dilemma.
While avoiding near term costs for energy investment, we have pushed a bow wave of problems before us that are swamping the economy and our environment. The consequences of those deferred costs are precipitating global problems and require immediate attention. Consumption of polluting fuel that we have to borrow to buy is a dead end and dumping money into a 100 year old energy architecture mires us deeper into a situation with no future. We need to think and plan ahead.
Investing in future eco-friendly, home grown, engineered for the future energy technology will improve our life quality and is a foundation for economic and social health. What exactly we are waiting for?
